Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
