A recent study indicates that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying such medications should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
